“Thornton Dial: Recent Works” will feature large scale assemblages as well as works on paper by Alabama artist Thornton Dial. Early categorization placed Dial in the self-taught or vernacular field but as his work gained wider attention he has found himself “squarely within the arena of contemporary artists” (Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas). Featured at exhibitions of both the New Museum and the Whitney Biennial, both in New York City, and included in the permanent collections of the High Museum of Art, the Milwaukee Museum of Art,the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Dial is equally adept in the media of painting, sculpture, assemblage and works on paper. The exhibition opens on Thursday, January 14th at Tanner-Hill Gallery’s Atlanta Project Space at White Provision and will be up until mid-February 2010.
