Features Artists Market, Art Walk and Fine Arts Exhibition
by Ashley Easton
This weekend marks the 22nd annual Decatur Arts Festival, and in addition to a lot of fun events planned in the areas of performing and literary arts, there will be some great visual arts events on offer as well.
The festival will get off to an early start with an ArtWalk on Friday evening from 5-10 p.m. According to the festival website, “Local shops, retailers and restaurants [will] host Decatur’s largest, single-night art experience with city-wide art show openings and receptions that are free and open to the public.” Just under 20 local businesses will be participating, which should give you plenty of reason to roam all about Decatur as the day turns into evening and the late spring air cools down.
The Artists’ Market takes place on Saturday (10 a.m.-6 p.m.) and Sunday (11 a.m.-6 p.m.) on the Square. More than 140 carefully selected artists will be exhibiting work at the market in a variety of artistic mediums. Bring an umbrella in case one of those scattered thunderstorms in the forecast decides to drop by Decatur in the afternoon!
The fine arts exhibition opened this past Tuesday, and will be up through June 6. It is housed at the Dalton Gallery on Agnes Scott’s campus, and is a juried multimedia exhibition including both regional and national artists. The gallery is open 2-5 p.m. daily, and during the festival the hours will be extended as follows:
• May 28: 2-10 pm
• May 29-30: noon-6 pm
• June 6: 2-6 pm
