Michi Meko: Navigating this American Landscape
Openining reception June 11, 2010 6p-10:30p
Michi Meko is an accomplished Atlanta based artist presents the culmination of his multiple disciplinary art practices in recent years. Michi Meko Navigates this American landscape with instructions offered by his father and Uncle’s-a constant awareness of surroundings a plethora of responses for each. With instructions in hand Meko leaves his native Alabama, with symbols from cotton to the confederate flags. Meko fuses these symbols to create a subversive cryptic language- that on surface is harmless, but scratch it and it reveals a history- a history that is unraveled through rituals and storytelling that qualify Meko to be elevated to Griot status. Meko assumes the orator role and passes this rich history in parables in the form of mixed media installations, sculptures, paintings, including a refined touch with spray-paint.
Meko uses a non linear history to create a mental space where traditional aesthetics do not apply. In this space the future of Blackness itself may be reversed. This unapologetic exhibition challenges the common conceptions of art. Meko’s voice is steeped in history form Sun Ra to Adrian Piper to Fred Moten continuing the theories passed down from the Afro futurists. His exhibition conceptualizes the space that is necessary for post colonialism to exist, and suggests a future return to the original voice; a voice that responds to a visceral tribal heritage.
