On Thursday, October 7, the Swan Coach House Gallery and the Forward Arts Foundation opens its fall exhibit, “Whitney Stansell: The Happening, the Remembering, The Recounting.”
Whitney Stansell’s work combines painting, drawing, printmaking, and textiles to create work that explores memory, history, and imagination. This exploration has become the point of origin from which Stansell has created an extended cast of characters – each of their narratives developed from the recounting of stories by family, friends, and neighbors.
In her latest body of work, The Happening, The Remembering, The Recounting, Stansell explores the lives of nine characters and the landscapes they inhabit. The work interweaves these disparate characters’ stories, allowing them to exist simultaneously in the same world. This body of work takes form as a multi-volume, hand-printed book. One volume contains the characters and the objects that inhabit their narrative world, while the other contains a continuous string of environments that serve as interchangeable backdrops against which the characters’ stories play out. The third component to the book is a cast of secondary characters – the people who populate the places. In addition to the multi-volume book, original drawings from which the book was printed will be on display.
“We are honored to showcase Whitney’s first major solo exhibit at the Swan Coach House Gallery”, says Marianne Lambert, Curator. “Whitney is a talented young emerging artist I have had my eye on for some time. We hope this will be just the beginning of many more important shows for her.”
