Solomon Projects announces the premiere of “Tango,” a major new sculptural installation by Charleston, SC-based artist Joe Walters, to be installed in the main space of the gallery next month. This is the first major installation of Walters’ sculpture to be shown in Atlanta in almost a decade. The exhibition will also include a recent sculpture entitled Waterline Kisses, which Walters will compose for the front gallery.
Tango demonstrates anew Walters’ talent as an acute observer of the natural world. For the main gallery, the artist has created a lyrical, curving composition that is inspired by the dance it is named for. Tango is one of Walters’ most ambitious works to date – created by over 200 individual sculptural elements – and will be installed under the gallery skylight for maximum effect. As with all his work, each sculpture in this exhibition is hand-modeled by the artist of polymer clay and finished with numerous layers of sand and paint to create a rich, textured appearance. Composed of branches, fallen leaves, flower heads, twigs, seedpods and other plant material, these are Walters’ musings on the structure and beauty of the natural environment. The series evokes the artistic tradition of “still life,” capturing in material form the ephemerality of life.
This is Joe Walters’ fourth solo exhibition at Solomon Projects. His sculpture installations and works of paper have been exhibited widely in museums around the country, most recently at the Owensboro Museum of Art, Owensboro, KY; Weatherspoon Art Museum, Greensboro, NC; Jacksonville Museum of Modern Art, Jacksonville, FL; Columbia Museum of Art, Columbia, SC; SECCA, Winston-Salem, NC; and Piccolo Spoleto: Contemporary Charleston 2004, Charleston, SC. In February 2011, the Sumter County Gallery of Art will mount a mid-career survey of his sculpture and works on paper from the past decade. He holds a MFA in sculpture from East Carolina University, Greenville, NC and is the recipient of a NEA Visual Arts Fellowship in Sculpture. His sculptural installations are included in such notable collections as the Kemper Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, Clemson University, Clemson, SC and Emory University, Atlanta, GA. Walters received a Southern Arts Federation/National endowment for the Arts Regional Fellowship in 1995. Joe Walters was born in Kentucky. He resides and works in Charleston, SC.
