Mr. Imagination, AKA Gregory Warmack, is a renowned visionary artist from the south side of Chicago. After a fire destroyed his home, his beloved pets, and most of his art, he relocated to Atlanta in 2009. This exhibition represents his reemergence into the art world following this devastating tragedy. Works that survived the fire are featured alongside new creations, never previously exhibited.
While hardship seems to fuel this irrepressible artist’s creative energies, a commitment to reclamation drives his vision. Using everyday objects including bottlecaps, paintbrushes and brooms, in addition to sandstone and found wood carved into totems, he creates sculptures that are at once timeless and ancient, yet deeply personal and representative of his own prideful identity. His talent caught the attention of Chicago gallery owner Carl Hammer, with whom he exhibited for many years beginning in 1983. Today, the creations of Mr. Imagination can be seen anywhere from the House of Blues nightclubs to the Smithsonian Institution. This is his first Atlanta exhibition at Barbara Archer Gallery.
Through March 19.
