In the body of work, “15 Glenview Circle,” Margaret Hiden explores themes of presence, absence, passage and memory, as well as the photograph’s cultural role as visual validation of one’s existence. By taking on the role as curator, photographer and artist, Hiden is investigating her grandfather’s struggle with dementia and attempting to reconcile his memory loss. Appropriated images from the past are re-contextualized and layered with imagery from the present. Two slices of time become joined in one frame and serve as metaphor for the deteriorating mind in which past and present are unclear.
Margaret Hiden is a Birmingham native and has a BFA in photography from Birmingham-Southern College. She currently resides in Atlanta where she is working towards her MFA in photography at SCAD Atlanta. Margaret has shown her work locally and nationally and has received international recognition.
Through April 30.
