“Works on Paper” at {Poem 88}

“Works On Paper” at {Poem88} offers a wide-range of conceptual strategies as well as styles of execution in this exhibition encompassing drawing, watercolor, color printing, altered paper objects and paper constructs. While artists Jon Ciliberto, Sharon Shapiro, Kevin Osborne work within more straight-forward approaches to image making, Karen Tauches and Christina Price Washington rely on either found text or found images for the basis of their explorations. Both Brad Brooks and Nancy VanDevender move this appropriation several steps forward embedding biting cultural commentary with the immediacy of agitprop posters or the refinement of custom wallpapers. Finally, EK Huckaby explores paper in more sculptural constructs that, on some level, present if not an indictment of mass-produced material culture, an indication of what’s vexing or puzzling about its ubiquity.
