Kiang Projects announces “Existential Emptiness,” an exhibition of new work by the internationally acclaimed Beijing artist, Cui Xiuwen, born 1970. Cui is known for her multi-disciplinary work questioning issues of gender and identity. “Existential Emptiness” places the narrative in the idealistic landscape of the Chinese subconscious, searching for essential truths of humanity and an antidote to contemporary materialism. Cui uses Chinese characteristics to enhance her focus on gender equity which is historic, cross cultural, and global, as well as a core issue of her work. Cui pursues a critical inquiry into the philosophy of emptiness, a phenomena arising from the Buddha’s observation that nothing possesses an essential, enduring identity and acceptance leads to wisdom and inner peace. This narrative is re -imaged in the dynamic between the artist and her alter ego or doppelganger.
Cui Xiuwen’s works have been widely exhibited and collected, including: Tate Modern, London, Victoria & Albert,London, International Center of Photography , New York, Brooklyn Museum, New York, Centre Pompidou, Paris, Prague Biennial, Institute Valencià d’Art Modern, Today Art Museum, Beijing, The Finnish Museum of Photography, The First Israeli International Image Biennial , ZKM Center for Art and Media, Karlsruhe, Germany.
