William Cordova at Saltworks

SALTWORKS presents “búscame en el torbellino: but also time itself” an exhibition by William Cordova. Approaching his practice as an interdisciplinary artist, Cordova combines research, travel, writing, drawing, photography and sculpture to create artworks that disrupt assumptions of a linear history. For this exhibition, Cordova has produced a series of photographs, drawings and several sculptures including “this one’s 4u”, a self-contained projection module resembling scaffolding turned on its edge. This is Cordova’s first solo exhibition at the gallery.

Suggested by the title, Cordova invites the viewer to consider the juxtaposition of past and present moments as a way of constructing a future. Cordova’s investment in working with reclaimed materials/refuse is rooted in the economy and history these materials themselves reveal.

For the photography component, Cordova uses the Polaroid 600 as a filter to select “objects and words that may appear at first glance to be random…” then consolidates to form diptychs, to reinforce the narrative. The sensory experience culminates in “this one’s 4u”, where Cordova incorporates the language of 3rd cinema to propose a 4th cinematic space that utilizes audio, film and architecture. These components create different entry points allowing the viewer to consider multiple readings.

William Cordova was born in Lima, Peru, in 1971. He received his MFA from Yale University in 2004 and his BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1996. Recently his work was included in “Greater New York,” PS1 Contemporary Art Center, Long Island, NY (2010); “NeoHooDoo: Art for a Forgotten Faith,” The Menil Collection, Houston, TX; “Street Level,” The Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, MA; the 2008 Whitney Biennial, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; and solo exhibitions at Sikkema Jenkins & Co. New York, NY (2009); Arndt & Partner, Zürich, Switzerland (2007); and P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, Long Island City, NY (2006). Cordova is currently working on a project with interdisciplinary artists Coco Fusco and Leslie Hewitt to take place in Havana, Cuba in the Spring of 2012. William Cordova is based in Lima, Miami and New York.
