“Wash” performance at Whitespace

Performed by Stephanie Pharr, Onur Topal Sumer, Deidre Tyree and Martha Whittington, and created in tandem with Whittington’s installation “Used Air”, “Wash” considers the role and labor of the unsung coal miners, without whom our understanding of modern life would be incomplete.

Wash averts the gaze from the masculine setting of the mine to the home front and the women who support these subterranean workers through traditionally feminine activities.

Recorded Oct. 6, 2013 at Whitespace Gallery in Atlanta.
