Opal Gallery presents Children, photographs by Carl Martin. In his most recent portrait series of children ranging from ten months to eight years old, Martin challenges notions of representation and abstraction, and explores how perceptions of the world around us are dictated by the photograph as a symbol of personal and cultural significance. His large scale luxuriant portraits allow us to contemplate the “billfold snapshot” as a utilitarian sculptural object in the form of a school or license portrait; and, present a depth to his subjects that is often obscured by traditional aesthetic and usually not found in our ideas of photographs of children.
Carl Martin received his degree from The School of Visual Arts in New York. He received the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship in 1996. His work has been exhibited nationally and is included in numerous private and public collections including the Museum of Modern Art in NYC, New York and Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport in Atlanta, GA. He lives and works in Athens, GA.
Through Sept. 26.
