October 1, 2009
6:00 pmto9:00 pm

Alan Avery Art Company will hold a reception for an exhibition featuring the work of three photographers, Susan kae Grant, Michael Childers, and Robert Griffeth. The reception coincides with the First Thursdays Buckhead Gallery Walks, and in conjunction with Atlanta Celebrates Photography. The exhibition continues through November 3, 2009.

Dallas photographer, Susan kae Grant’s most recent body of work, “Night Journey,” is a multi-dimensional installation and suite of iris prints exploring the artistic interpretation of dreams, memory and the unconscious. It has been exhibited at thirteen venues and was included in the “International Biennale of Contemporary Art” in Florence, Italy. Grant will be giving an artist’s lecture on her work Saturday, October 3 at 2pm.

ME, MYSELF & ME, an exhibition of Michael Childers’ lost portfolio of Andy Warhol will be showing in the front gallery. Many photographs were taken of the larger than life character, but rarely did Warhol sit for a photographer for images with such transparency into his soul. Childers’ images seem to capture the loneliness that lay deep and trapped hidden within, away from the paparazzi and the bright lights of stardom.

Known for his iconic photographs of celebrities, Childers was also a founding photographer of Andy Warhol’s Interview and After Dark magazines. His close friendship with Warhol is evident in this unique portfolio, which includes images of the artist in his New York studio in 1976 and his Paris apartment in 1980 (thought to be the only photographs of him there).

The gallery will also feature the mysterious work of local photographer Robert Gregory Griffeth. The mystery in Griffeth’s photographs is not only the haunting imagery, but also his synergetic process. Griffeth uses several pieces of negatives to create one powerful image.

Group Show at Hagedorn Foundation

October 1, 2009
6:00 pmto9:00 pm

The Hagedorn Foundation Gallery, Atlanta’s leading new contemporary photography gallery, in conjunction with Atlanta Celebrates Photography 2009, presents “Subjects / Objects,” an exhibition by three artists of the large-scale print photograph:

Corey Daniels creates large format black and white images based on friends, family and a lifelong collection of antique objets & oddities. Out of these he creates transformational still life compositions and portraits. Daniels’ subjects transcend their everydayness through his thoughtful compositions, sensitive use of natural light and his stark address of his subjects. His works urge the viewer to dwell in the moment of observation, in the mystery and ambiguity of a small slice of life. Concurrent with his large format photography, Daniels has been a successful abstract painter for 40 years. This is his first gallery exhibition in the South.

Susan Harbage Page will present and discuss (October 16th, 7-8:30 p.m.) her anonymous portrait series of subjects in KKK hoods. These lush, colorful, large format photographs of people dressed in robes sewn from contemporary fabrics, such as a figured toile, seersucker, or Wal-Mart bags, deal with peoples’ roles and relationships in society. They present difficult ideas about race, gender and identity politics: the elaborate packaging vs. the implied questionable contents of her subjects’ belief systems. Ms. Harbage Page will also be presenting a complimentary exhibit of her altered antique linens in the Office Gallery on the 1rst floor. Amongst Page’s numerous awards are fellowships from the North Carolina Arts Council, the Camargo Foundation, and the Fulbright Program.

French photographer Floriane de Lassée’s vibrant cityscapes are her memorable introduction to the southern USA. Well known in Europe, de Lassée’s large scale night photographs of modern cities – Paris, New York, Moscow, Beijing – capture both the overall, recognizable image of the megalopolis in the background and, in the foreground, position a tableaux of an individual in his or her home. Each work is thus a natural diptych. The neon and metallic colors of her images gives them a liveliness that delivers her message about the isolation of the individual life vs. the anomie of the city with a punch.

Through October 29.
