Daniel Kariko’s “Storm Season” is a collection of pinhole photographs made in Louisiana wetlands in the aftermath of recent hurricanes. The Polaroid process was used in order to simplify the creation of the image, and more so, to truly develop the image at the location, giving the project a certain finality. The barrier islands of Southeast Louisiana represent the “First Line of Defense” against hurricanes. Our, often adversarial relationship with the world outside ultimately reveals our inability to adapt to the natural process. We stop the flooding of rivers by building levees, yet that destroys the wetlands that protect us from storm surges. These photographs set out to illustrate the results of such failed relations.

Reception held in conjunction with TULA first Thursdays, artist talk begins at 7:30 p.m.

Susanna Starr;
Susanna Starr will present “Not So Domestic: Veneer Doilies,” her recent series of wood veneer sculptures, in her Marcia Wood Gallery debut solo exhibition. Known for translating material in unexpected ways, Starr has created oversized and intricate doilies of richly finished micro-thin wood veneer. The furniture and the innocuous crocheted doilies that are used to protect and decorate its surfaces have morphed into one large, absurdly delicate object.

Through February 13.
